Utah Dads Agree: “We Needed That Rain”

SALT LAKE CITY — Surveying yellowing patches of lawn and noting that the crick was lower than last summer, Utah dads agreed that rainstorms across the state during firework season were a “true blessing” because “we really needed the moisture.”

“You can tell the lawn is really thirsty here” observed Taylorsville man Bruce Bingham, pointing to a particularly dry patch of grass, “because the sprinkler doesn’t quite reach it, and here, and here, and also here by the swing set” Bingham continued, pointing out each dry spot individually. “I don’t think I’ll have to turn on the sprinklers at all tonight, though.”

Dan Young, another Utah man who is a father, agreed that “we sure needed that rain,” as he discussed farmers and the reservoir. “I’ll bet all the farmers and boaters are sure smiling today,” says Young, “this winter was pretty dry by Utah standards, so those crops must be really thirsty.”

You’d be hard pressed to find a dad who disagrees. A recent Deseret News poll found that 92% of men who have sired a child “strongly agree” or “somewhat agree” with the statement “We Sure Needed That Rain,” with 3% adding “If I wanted to live in California, I’d move there” and 5% stating “Sure, but with such a dry winter we need more of it.”

At press time, your dad was telling his co-workers that if it were not for this recent precipitation, summer wildfires would be even more of a concern this year.
